Who We Are

The North Austin Foundation (NAF) is a Texas non-profit (Charter 10091-10) with tax exempt status under Section 501(c)3. It was established in 1986 to assist people with dependency on alcohol and/or other drugs to begin and maintain recovery. NAF receives no government funding and does not charge for services or shelter.

What We Do

NAF provides an alcohol and drug-free environment for people who desire to recover from the disease of addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs. It is a stable place to attend Alcoholics Anonymous and other recovery meetings. Peer support is available 24 hours a day. Shelter is provided to people preparing for and awaiting admittance to inpatient treatment (see the Project Helping Hand tab). Since staff is hired from the community we serve, they share their recovery experience with residents and group members. To be successful with these objectives, finances are always a challenge as we receive no state or federal funding. We welcome tax deductible financial or other donations to ensure our doors stay open to pursue our mission. Since 2003, through Project Helping Hand, NAF has helped over 2,000 people get access to inpatient treatment or other recovery services.

Project Helping Hand

Project Helping Hand (PHH) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the North Austin Foundation. PHH provides, at no charge, safe, clean and stable temporary shelter (up to 30 days) to individuals with the disease of addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs who are awaiting and preparing for admission to residential treatment. Many of our clients are indigent. Anyone wanting help with ending their alcohol or drug abuse can meet with our staff to discuss their options for recovery.

PHH helps residents with referrals to outside services such as Outreach, Screening, Assessment, and Referral (OSAR), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Medical Access Program (MAP). Such services allow the person to obtain a pre-admission clinical assessment, any medication that they may have been prescribed, and testing for tuberculosis (TB) in order to facilitate their timely acceptance and admission for treatment.

Our dormitories include six men’s beds and four women’s beds. Laundry, kitchen, and bathroom facilities are available to PHH clients. Potential clients must meet set criteria to be admitted and may stay for up to 30 nights. Please contact us by calling (512)614-0184 for more information. A staff member is available weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and then after 7:00 p.m. On weekends a staff member is available after 1:00 p.m.

There is no cost associated with the services provided by PHH. PHH receives no state of Texas or federal monies; our main sources of income are charitable Bingo and generous donations.
